When teeth break, crack, or chip, there are multiple ways to fix them. One of those ways is a method called composite bonding. We’ll walk you through all the things you need to know about it!

What is composite bonding?

Composite bonding is a technique used in dental offices to restore your teeth. Using tooth-colored materials, we fill in flaws in the tooth. That material bonds to the surface, becoming part of the tooth.

What is composite bonding used for?

Composite bonding can be utilized to fix the following conditions:

  • Discolored or stained teeth
  • Chipped teeth
  • Cracked teeth
  • Crooked teeth
  • Size and shape of teeth

While there are other cosmetic dentistry options available for these same issues, composite bonding is a great affordable option for those with small dental flaws who aren’t ready for a more permanent or extensive treatment.

What is the composite bonding process like?

Now we know what it is and what it's used for, but what does the process look like? Treatment usually lasts between 30 minutes and an hour in our Walnut Creek Dental Office, and is as follows:

  • We start with thorough teeth cleaning
  • We apply an acidic gel to tiny open pores on the tooth. The gel is then rinsed away.
  • After matching the color to your natural tooth, a thin layer of liquid composite resin is applied
  • We use a special curing light to harden the resin
  • The process gets repeated until it’s the required thickness
  • We will shape it with a dental drill, followed by a thin layer of polish

What happens after composite bonding?

Once your treatment is complete, you’ll be ecstatic to flash your new smile to everyone you meet. Composite bonding typically lasts up to 10 years with good care. To make the most of your newly made-over teeth, follow these simple tips:

  • Maintain good oral hygiene by continuing to frequently brush and floss
  • Don’t miss your regular dental cleanings, preferably every 6 months
  • Things like drinking coffee or smoking should be avoided
  • Skip habits that may cause damage to your teeth, such as chewing on pens or crunching on hard candies.
